The list is the fundamental data structure of Racket. A list can contain any kind of value, including other lists. When the second argument is not empty and not itself produced by cons, the result prints in a special way.The two values joined with cons are printed between parentheses, but with a dot (i.e., a period surrounded by whitespace) in between: It won't surprise us the name Racket, that's going to come first before the two arguments just like plus comes before the arguments to plus. Well it's been a LONG time since I've done real work in scheme, but I'm pretty sure scheme by default optimizes away recursion when it detects tail recursion, so you shouldn't have anything special to do as long as your base case has all the information it needs to return, which should be the case in even a naive implementation of finding the last element of a list. A list is a combination of pairs that creates a linked list. If you know your input list is sorted then you can do something like what I wrote below. predicate recognizes the empty list.

So cons will take an element in a list and create a list one element longer.
